Text: Beer, Johnston, Staab, Clausen [2003], Vector Mechanics for Engineers-Dynamics, with registration code, 7th Edition, McGraw-Hill.
Introduction: This course is a basic core course in the engineering curriculum. The material covered is a foundation for many other courses and is used frequently by most engineers. Therefore, it is important that you understand the material well and become proficient in its use. It is the goal of each of us, me and my teaching assistants, that you do well in Dynamics. If you participate in all classes and do all the assigned homework, you will ensure a good result in this course. Please do your part -- I promise to do mine.
Homework and in-class activities: A homework assignment is associated with ALL class meetings. A homework set that is assigned in a given week will be collected at the beginning of the week that follows. Use green engineering paper and the format given in the example that is distributed in class; staple multiple pages together. Late homework will not be accepted. I will use cooperative learning technique to teach this course. For homework report and in-class activities, please read the document on Cooperative Learning carefully.
Exams:
EGM 3400 students will take the first three exams;
EGM 3401 students will take all four exams.
These exams
are
closed book,
closed notes,
with one 3 x 5 inch
(2 sides) formula sheet permitted, emphasizing
good understanding of the theory through derivations together
with demonstrated problem solving skills.
Formula sheet
should be
hand written
,
and NOT typed up or copied, and then
reduced to tiny fonts. Particularly, it should not contain the
entire solution of any problem. Formula sheet violating the above
specifications will be taken away
during the exam.
Derivations
are generally part of the exams; be sure to learn the derivations as
taught in the lectures.
There are
no scheduled make-up exams.
If missing one exam is unavoidable (e.g., due to grave illness and
with a proper letter from the examining physician, etc.), contact
your instructor in advance or as soon as you can, so that
the instructor can find a way to help (e.g., by waiving that exam
for you).
Other reasons to miss an exam (e.g., early vacation travel) is
not
considered as valid.
See the
tips for exam takers.
Grading: For EGM 3400, 30% for each of the three exams, 10% for homework. For EGM 3401, 22.5% for each of the four exams,10% for homework. Overall scores of 90, 80, 70, and 60 will be SUFFICIENT conditions for grades of A, B, C, D, respectively. No significant departure from this grade scale should be anticipated.
Questions regarding exam and homework grades must be brought to your instructor within one week after the return of your exam papers and homework reports. A formal written letter explaining your concern must be attached to the paper when it is brought for reconsideration.
Tutorial Sessions: Graduate teaching assistants will be available in room NEB107 (and vicinity, times to be posted). This room is open all week and may be used for individual and group studying. Exam and homework solutions will be posted in the course web page.
Student Responsibility: You are responsible for all material covered in the text assignments, in the homework, and in the lectures. Regular class attendance is expected, and you are responsible for knowing all announcements made during class and on the course web page. Your name, social security number, and class section number must be on all exam and homework pages. Finally, I am are here to help you; please come and see me before little problems become big ones.
